Two Days in Istria: A Weekend Itinerary Composed by Locals

One day in Istria forces a choice: the green inland of truffle forests and hill towns, or the Adriatic. Two days means you do not have to choose. Where to base yourself

Day 1 - Inland: truffles, hill towns and rakija

Start at 10:00 at the edge of the Motovun forest, following a truffle hunter and his dogs through the same oak woodland where record white truffles have been dug up. You will smell, hold and taste what the dogs find. It ends before noon, which is exactly the point: Motovun's hilltop konobas are ten minutes away, and lunch with fresh truffles over pasta is obligatory.

At 15:00 you are expected at the Old School Distillery, where rakija and liqueurs are still made the old way - tasting included, designated driver advised. Wind the day down with golden-hour views from Motovun's walls, or head back to the coast for dinner.

Day 2 - The sea: a fjord by kayak, dolphins at golden hour

At 09:30, while the water is glassy, paddle into the Lim fjord - a protected green channel that cuts ten kilometres into the coast, lined with cliffs and oyster farms. Three hours on the water, no experience needed. The afternoon is for swimming and a slow meal in Poreč.
