Poreč with Kids: Water Park, Adventure Park, Boat Trips and Rainy-Day Backups

A local's plan for a family week in Poreč: which days to give to Aquacolors and Skyfox, which boat trips take children at half price, where the truffle dog lives, and what to do when it rains.

Poreč is where Istrian families spend their own summer, and it shows: the beaches are shallow and shaded, the two biggest children's attractions on the peninsula are ten minutes from the centre, and the boat crews on the Riva are used to small passengers. The trick is pacing. A week here with children works best as a rhythm of one big day, one easy day, a boat afternoon, a day inland and a backup for the inevitable thunderstorm. This is the plan we give friends who arrive with a car full of inflatables.

The big day: Aquacolors

Aquacolors, on the road to Zelena Laguna, is the largest water park in Croatia and the day the children will remember. Thirteen slides from gentle to the vertical Magicone, a wave pool, a splash zone for toddlers and a lazy river that is the longest in southern Europe, so parents can float while the kids queue for the big ones. Go on a weekday, arrive at opening so the loungers by the family pool are still free, and plan on the whole day - nobody has ever left early. The season runs from late May to mid-September, and the ticket is cheaper booked ahead than at the gate. Children under the height limit on the sign go free.

The other big day: Skyfox Adventure Park

Ten minutes north at Motodrom near Tar, Skyfox is an aerial adventure park in an oak forest: fifty climbing elements across colour-coded trails, from yellow courses a metre off the ground for four-year-olds to a ten-metre red course and 800 metres of zip lines for teenagers and parents who want to show off. Every child is harnessed and supervised, the packages are sold by trail so you only pay for what each age can do, and the family bundles are the best value. Two to three hours is plenty, mornings are cooler, and the karting track next door is the obvious bribe for afterwards.

Boat afternoons that work with children

Not every boat on the Riva is built for a six-year-old, but two are. The Lim Fjord, Lunga Island and Vrsar tour leaves at 13:00, keeps the group to twenty, and has the thing children talk about for a week: a stop at an islet where the fish come to the boat to be fed by hand, then a swim, then the slow run up the fjord between the green cliffs. Three hours, unlimited drinks for the adults, half price for children. The Dolphins and Panorama Cruise on the Fjera is the shorter, calmer option: a wooden boat, two hours along the coast watching for the resident dolphins, snacks on board, children at half price and back in time for dinner. Dolphins are wild and not guaranteed, so set expectations and treat a sighting as a bonus.

From about age ten, the sunset sea kayaking tour is the upgrade: a child paddles in front of a parent in a stable double kayak, the route hugs the town walls and the islet of Sveti Nikola, and the guide keeps the pace gentle. Children pay half and life jackets are included.

The day inland: a truffle dog and some goats

The Truffle Hunting Poreč experience is the surprise hit with children. It starts in the woods behind Zelena Laguna, not in a restaurant, and the star is a trained truffle dog that works the undergrowth while the host explains what it is looking for and why a lump of fungus costs what it does. Ninety minutes, small groups, a gift pack of tartufata and truffle oil for every adult, and it runs year-round. Pair it with lunch and an afternoon at Monte Formento in Kaštelir, where the olive oil tasting happens on a farm with twelve goats and four donkeys that children can feed while the adults taste three oils and a wine with homemade bread.

When it rains

Istrian summer storms are short but real, and they tend to arrive mid-afternoon. The Euphrasian Basilica and its museum take an hour and the gold mosaics impress even children, the Old School Distillery in Vošteni has a tour of the still room with apple juice for the kids while the adults taste rakija, and the Monte Formento tasting above is indoors too. Boat and kayak tours are cancelled in rough sea and refunded in full, so a rainy-day plan costs nothing to hold. Our rainy-day guide has more.

A sample week

Day one, beach and the old town. Day two, Aquacolors. Day three, the Lim Fjord boat at 13:00 after a lazy morning. Day four, Skyfox in the morning, beach after. Day five, truffle dog and Monte Formento. Day six, the dolphin cruise or the kayak at sunset. Day seven, whatever the children ask to do again, which is usually Aquacolors. Book the boats and Skyfox a day or two ahead in July and August; everything else can be decided at breakfast. For more on the town itself, see our Poreč guide, and for the rest of the peninsula the Istria with kids article.

Frequently asked questions

What age is Aquacolors suitable for?

All ages. There is a splash zone and shallow pools for toddlers, family slides for primary-school children and the big slides for teenagers and adults. Children under the posted height limit enter free; the all-day ticket covers everything.

Can young children do Skyfox?

Yes. The yellow trails are built for children from about four, close to the ground and supervised, and the packages are sold by trail so you only pay for the courses your child can do. Older children and adults have trails up to ten metres with zip lines.

Which Poreč boat trip is best for kids?

The three-hour Lim Fjord, Lunga Island and Vrsar tour: a fish-feeding stop, a swim and the fjord, with children at half price. The two-hour dolphin cruise on the wooden boat Fjera is the shorter option for younger children.

What can we do in Poreč with kids when it rains?

The basilica and its museum, the Old School Distillery tour with juice for children, the Monte Formento olive farm tasting with its goats and donkeys, and the truffle hunt, which runs in light rain. Boat tours cancelled for weather are refunded in full.

Do I need a car in Poreč with children?

Not for the town, the beaches or the boats, which all start on foot. A car helps for Skyfox, Monte Formento and the distillery, each ten to twenty minutes away; Aquacolors is reachable by the resort shuttle or a short taxi ride.
