Hidden Beaches in Istria: Secret Spots Only Locals Know

Everyone knows the big beaches in Poreč and Rovinj. The ones with sunbeds lined up in rows, music playing from the beach bar, and towels spread so close together you can hear your neighbour's phone conversation. Those beaches are fine. But Istria has something better.

Along this coastline, tucked between pine forests and limestone cliffs, there are small coves and rocky inlets where the water is so clear you can count the pebbles on the seabed from three metres up. Places where you might be the only person there for an entire afternoon. No parking fees, no cocktail menus, no Instagram influencers posing on the rocks. Just the sea, the sun and the sound of cicadas in the trees behind you.

Cape Kamenjak

This nature park at the very southern tip of Istria is probably the worst kept secret on the peninsula, but it still manages to feel wild and untouched. The coastline here is jagged and dramatic, with dozens of small bays carved into the rock. Some are sandy, some are pebbly, and some are just flat slabs of white stone that slope gently into deep blue water.

The trick is to go early or late in the day, and to walk a bit further than everyone else. Most visitors stop at the first beach they see. If you keep going along the coastal path for another ten minutes, you will find your own private corner of the Adriatic.

Lone Bay near Rovinj

Just south of Rovinj, past the big resort hotels, there is a stretch of coastline backed by an old oak forest. The beaches here are small, rocky and shaded by trees that have been growing in the same spot for hundreds of years. The water is deep and cold even in August, which keeps the crowds away.

Bring a mask and snorkel. The underwater rocks here are covered in sea urchins and small fish that dart between the crevices. It feels more like the Greek islands than mainland Croatia.

Funtana Coves

Between Poreč and Vrsar, the village of Funtana has a handful of small coves that most tourists drive straight past on their way somewhere else. The water here is shallow and warm, perfect for kids, and the seabed is a mix of sand and flat rock.

There is a small konoba above one of the coves where you can get grilled fish and a carafe of local Malvazija for a fraction of what you would pay in Poreč. Sit on the terrace, watch the boats go past and wonder why you ever bothered with the town beach.

Sveta Marina

East of Rabac, this tiny settlement has a pebble beach surrounded by dense Mediterranean vegetation. Getting there requires a short drive down a narrow road and a five minute walk through the woods. That is enough to keep most visitors away.

The beach itself is nothing spectacular to look at, but the water is exceptional. Crystal clear, calm, and with a gentle slope that makes it easy to wade in. There is no shade except what the trees provide, so bring an umbrella if you plan to stay all day.

How to Find These Places

The best way to discover hidden beaches in Istria is to rent a kayak, take a boat tour along the coast, or simply drive the coastal roads and stop whenever you see a path leading down to the water. Not every path leads to a beach, but the ones that do are usually worth the walk.
