Sea Kayaking in Istria
The calm, protected waters of Istria's western coast make it one of the best places in the Mediterranean to sea kayak, and you do not need any experience to enjoy it. Most guided tours are built for complete beginners, with stable kayaks, sheltered routes and guides whose main goal is to show you a good time.
Why Istria is great for sea kayaking
A long line of offshore islands and inlets shelters most of the shoreline from wind and swell, so even first-timers paddle in water that stays calm and clear. In a single morning you can pass half-submerged Roman ruins, hidden coves reachable only from the water, and sea caves cut into the limestone, all at a pace where you actually notice them.
Where to paddle
The Vrsar archipelago, a cluster of uninhabited islands just offshore, is some of the best kayaking territory in the region and a favourite with families. Poreč offers coastal routes past the old town and into sea caves, while Rovinj is famous for sunset paddles around its little islands with the colourful old town as a backdrop. For something different, the sheltered Lim fjord is glassy on most days and often combined with a stop at a local oyster farm.
When to go and what to expect
The water is warm and calm from late May through October. Tours usually last two to three hours with swimming stops, and sunset departures are especially popular. For a deeper look at each route, read our full guide to sea kayaking in Istria.
