Day Trip from Poreč to Rovinj: A Complete Guide

Two of Istria's most beautiful towns are just 35 kilometres apart. Here is how to make the most of a day trip between them.

Poreč and Rovinj are both on the western coast of Istria, separated by about 35 kilometres of coastline. You could drive between them in half an hour. But the best way to make this journey is by sea. A day cruise from Poreč to Rovinj turns a simple transfer into one of the highlights of your holiday.

Getting There by Boat

Boat trips to Rovinj typically depart from Poreč Marina in the morning, cruise south along the coast with stops for swimming, and arrive in Rovinj before lunch. The journey takes a couple of hours and passes some of the prettiest stretches of the Istrian coastline.

On the way, you will see small fishing villages, forested headlands, and hidden coves that are invisible from the road. Most boats make at least one swimming stop in a quiet bay where the water is clear enough to see the bottom from the deck.

What to Do in Rovinj

Most tours give you three to four hours of free time in Rovinj, which is plenty to explore the old town, have lunch and soak up the atmosphere.

Start by walking into the old town through the Balbi Arch. The streets inside are narrow, cobbled and steep, winding uphill towards the Church of St. Euphemia at the top. Climb the bell tower if it is open. The view from the top is one of the best in all of Croatia.

After that, wander down to the waterfront. Rovinj's harbour is lined with colourful buildings, small boats and restaurants. Find a table by the water, order some grilled fish and a glass of Malvazija, and watch the boats come and go.

Shopping and Art

Rovinj has a long history as an artists' town, and the narrow streets of the old town are full of small galleries and workshops. You will find paintings, ceramics, jewellery and handmade souvenirs that are a world away from the mass produced stuff in the tourist shops.

There is also a small market near the harbour where local producers sell olive oil, lavender products, truffles and wine. These make much better souvenirs than a fridge magnet.

The Return Journey

The boat back to Poreč usually departs in the late afternoon, giving you a sunset cruise home. After a day of walking, eating and exploring, there is something deeply satisfying about sitting on the deck of a boat watching the Istrian coast slide past in the evening light.

Practical Tips

Wear comfortable shoes. Rovinj is built on a hill and the streets are cobbled. Bring sunscreen, a hat and a light layer for the boat ride back. Most tours include the boat transfer but not lunch, so bring some cash for eating in Rovinj.

Book in advance during July and August. These trips are popular and spaces fill up, especially on the boats with smaller group sizes. A smaller boat means a more personal experience and more flexibility with swimming stops.
